The Bristol Channel and South West Wales sailing itinerary for Paddle Steamer Waverley, the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer, has been released. The historic steamship will return to Clevedon, Bideford, Ilfracombe, Minehead, Portishead, and Weston-super-Mare from Monday, June 2, to Wednesday, June 25, offering a variety of cruises.
Waverley’s Master, Captain Dominic McCall, said: “We have developed the best possible sailing programme for the Bristol Channel to ensure that as many locals and visitors as possible have the opportunity to step aboard Waverley and enjoy a traditional pleasure steamer excursion. I am delighted that we are able to sail Waverley from over a dozen locations on the Bristol Channel and around South West Wales.
"We have also increased the number of coach pick-up locations to connect with Waverley's sailings, with Gloucester and Bath in addition to Bristol now on the itinerary. I particularly enjoy cruising the Bristol Channel coastline with its stunning seascapes and look forward to bringing Waverley back this year and welcoming passengers aboard for a great day out.”
Three trips are planned to the remote Lundy Island on June 3, 15, and 17, where the Bristol Channel meets the Atlantic, allowing passengers time to explore the island.
In celebration of Railway 200, the 200th anniversary of the modern railway, Waverley will connect with three steam railways—the West Somerset, Brecon Mountain, and Lynton & Barnstaple railways—offering passengers the "ultimate steam day out" with a combined paddle steamer and steam train experience.
The number of evening cruises has increased this season, including a special sailing in support of Clevedon Pier on Friday, June 6. On Monday, June 9, a unique evening cruise up the River Severn under the bridges will be available, with passengers able to board at Clevedon or Portishead. On Tuesday, June 10th, Waverley offers an evening trip from Weston-super-Mare, viewing Birnbeck Island and the Holm Islands. On Friday, June 20, an evening cruise from Clevedon around the Holms will support the Motor Vessel Balmoral, currently undergoing restoration in Bristol.
Once aboard, passengers can experience the sight and sound of a real steamship, hear the telegraph ring, visit the Engine Room, watch the engine in motion, and see the paddles turning through the portholes. Full catering facilities are available on all cruises, with options including hot or cold snacks, tea and cake, a hot meal in the Dining Saloon, or refreshments in the period lounges. A Souvenir Shop is also on board, offering exclusive gifts and mementos.
Waverley is currently berthed in Glasgow undergoing annual maintenance and refurbishment, with works totaling over £1 million. The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of Waverley sailing in preservation. Sailings start on May 16th in Scotland on the Clyde and the Inner Hebrides before she sets course for the Bristol Channel and South West Wales.
Special offers for seniors are available on selected dates, allowing a friend to travel for free. Children aged 5-16 can travel for just £1 on certain trips, while under-5s sail for free on all journeys.
Bookings are now open, with tickets available at waverleyexcursions.co.uk or by calling the booking office at 0141 243 2224.
