Broadmead Business Improvement District (BID) is a partnership of 272 levy-paying businesses in Bristol Shopping Quarter, working together to make the city centre shopping experience even better. Established in 2005, with a further three successful renewal ballots, the most recent being in 2018 for a five-year term to 2023. Broadmead BID operates under the governance of Visit West.
Our vision is to make Bristol Shopping Quarter everyone’s favourite destination – a vibrant place to shop, work and socialise. At the heart of what we do is our unwavering support for retailers, helping to drive footfall and deliver high standards in all areas.
Our marketing activity is focussed on the Bristol Shopping Quarter website and the @bristolshopping social media accounts – Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We send out regular customer newsletters featuring shopping updates, events, offers and competitions and we also use the award-winning LoyalFree app to share deals, loyalty schemes and useful trails, helping customers find their way around.
Seasonal events and the local Christmas market are part of an exciting programme to animate the streets, encouraging shoppers to visit more often and stay longer.
We work with Bristol City Centre BID and other partners on collaborative city-wide projects to raise Bristol’s profile and encourage footfall into the shopping quarter including the successful #BristolTogether and #LoveBristol campaigns.
Our aim is to achieve high standards throughout Bristol Shopping Quarter, working with our partners Bristol Waste to provide a rapid response service to remove graffiti and deal with other cleansing issues.
This work complements the street sweeping and litter removal provided by Bristol City Council.
Hanging floral baskets add a welcome dash of colour from early summer and during the festive season, our Christmas lights add sparkle.
Regular and targeted communication, including newsletters and social media updates, is a cornerstone of the successful relationship we have developed with our levy-payers.
A series of free training workshops have seen retailers become Dementia Friends and another raised awareness of the issues surrounding homelessness.
To help improve the safety of Bristol’s streets, we host two contactless donation points for the Safer Off The Streets campaign, supporting the city’s night shelters.
Broadmead BID also supports Shopmobility, a local charity that aims to assist people to get around the city, helping make our retailers more accessible for all.
Through the Business Crime Reduction Partnership (BCRP), the BID works alongside the police and the city council to help reduce crime against businesses, identify areas of concern and communicate intelligence through a radio and offender management information sharing system.
We are particularly proud that we have been able to fund a full-time retail support ranger since 2019. Across the board, feedback about this role has been consistently positive, acknowledging that it has helped reduce losses and improve safety for retailers and shoppers.
Monthly security meetings, attended by the police, give retailers the opportunity to share intelligence and concerns.
Thanks to the investment and involvement of our levy payers, The Broadmead BID is helping to improve Bristol Shopping Quarter for everyone: A welcoming place that is safe, clean and vibrant for all to enjoy.
