Job Title: Volunteer Manager

Salary: £30,500
Hours: Full time (36.25 hours per week). With 4 days per week needed on site and some weekend working (6-8 weekend days per year) to be able to connect with volunteers (who are on-site 7 days per week). We will consider someone who wants to work 0.8FTE.
Summary: The Volunteer Manager will grow and develop the volunteer programme so that the SS Great Britain Trust has a diverse cohort of volunteers who are knowledgeable and motivated to support the delivery of the organisation’s strategy.
Purpose of job:
Volunteering is vital to the Trust not only because of the contribution volunteers make to the Trust’s strategic delivery, but also for the opportunities volunteering provides to engage with and connect people from the wider Bristol area. The Volunteer Manager will support volunteers to develop their skills and use their experiences to support the Trust.
The Volunteering Manager will have responsibility for the growth and delivery of the volunteer programme. You’ll work with the Senior Leadership team to devise a strategy for growth and work to shape and improve the whole volunteer journey from recruitment and induction through to reward and recognition and everything in between. You will work closely with the Volunteer Officer and all departments across the charity to ensure that our programme responds to the needs of the Trusts in a scalable, sustainable, and agile way while providing a rewarding high-quality experience for our incredible volunteers.
Main Tasks:
- Take responsibility for the volunteer programme and lead in growing our volunteer team in line with organisational need.
- Develop recruitment plans and lead on recruiting volunteers from new groups or communities and develop a schedule of recruitment events, and work to improve inclusivity and diversity across our volunteering programme.
- Lead on developing engaging recruitment days and group inductions, working with the Volunteer Officer to deliver them
- Implement and deliver an end-to-end volunteer supporter care journey to ensure that every volunteer feels valued, included and informed. You will develop a programme of events, activities and training sessions to ensure that all volunteers are fully briefed with up-to-date Trust information and inspired to carry out their roles.
- Create engaging content to help raise awareness of volunteering opportunities and the impact that volunteers make to the charity’s work.
- Seek regular feedback from our volunteers to help understand and review their experiences and how we can develop and improve the programmes.
- Identify and coordinate training needs for volunteers
- Work with Senior Managers to develop new volunteering roles across the Trust and work closely with volunteer supervisors to ensure they are equipped to oversee the volunteers in their areas.
- Develop and manage relationships with volunteers acting as a key point of contact
- Maintain the Volunteer budget, ensuring maximum value is obtained
- Ensure effective systems are in place to manage all aspects of volunteering, making them as streamlined as appropriate. Record and track volunteer recruitment, retention, progress and outcomes. Ensure that the impact of the volunteer work is recorded, monitored, and evaluated, and provide verbal or written reports for senior management and/or funders as required.
- Ensure that the volunteer database is kept up to date and all information is recorded and kept in line with the data protection legislation
- Implement and follow a system to ensure that regular reviews and relevant updates of processes, procedures or guidelines are carried out.
- Represent and advocate for the interests and needs of volunteers
- Manage and mentor the Volunteer Officer.
- To represent the Trust’s volunteer programme to external audiences, being an active member of the Bristol Volunteer Working Group, and find opportunities to learn, share and develop best practice working.

Knowledge and experience
- Experience of working with and managing volunteers, and a passion for volunteering (E)
- Knowledge of volunteering trends (E)
- Demonstrable experience of recruitment and mentoring (D)
- Experience of Equality & Diversity in relation to volunteer recruitment (D)
- Demonstrable experience of managing a database or data platform (E)
- Demonstrable experience of building effective working relationships with different teams, directorates, senior leaders and external stakeholders (E)
- A working knowledge of GDPR (E)
- Experience of planning an annual schedule of events and activities to deliver a strategic plan (D)
- Experience of delivering engaging presentations and effective training (E)
- Experience of seeking feedback from a range of people to incorporate into future planning
Skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in a friendly and professional manner
- Excellent writing and proof-reading skills, with the ability to tailor approach as necessary
- Excellent organisational and administration skills
- IT proficient with good knowledge of Microsoft packages including Excel spreadsheets, Teams and Canva, and excellent skills working with a database
- Influencing, diplomacy and negotiating skills
