Job Title: Visitor Experience Assistant
Hours: Variable hours, to cover weekends, school holidays and the occasional evening only
Contract: Zero hours contract, fixed term until 2nd November 2025
Reporting to: Visitor Operations Manager
Salary: £12 per hour
We are recruiting Visitor Experience Assistants to join our team.
We often say “it’s staff not stuff” because it’s the personal interactions with our staff and volunteers that make the difference between a good visit and a great visit. The Visitor Experience Assistant team are there to provide an exceptional standard of visitor experience to all of our visitors, from welcoming them warmly as they arrive, helping them learn about and engage with the stories of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and the SS Great Britain as they make their way around the site, right through to helping them pick and purchase the perfect memento in the gift shop and wishing them a fond farewell as they leave.
The Visitor Experience Assistant role offers great variety and a balance between working independently and within a team. The responsibilities include:
· Actively promoting everything we have to offer here at SS Great Britain – the two museums, Dry Dock and the mighty ship itself as a well as onsite activities including talks and tours
· Operating our admission ticket and retail till systems – this includes handling financial transactions, selling admission tickets, promoting Gift Aid and proactively recommending products and selling merchandise
· Checking in school parties and group bookings, setting them up with all the information they need to have a great visit
· Engaging with visitors and answering their queries across site
· Occasionally supporting on site interpretation and storytelling through engaging presentations and programmed activities
· Reporting to the Duty Manager on shift, ensuring health and safety is upheld, working through any issues that arise and assisting in emergency procedures
· Merchandising the gift shop and maintaining high shop floor standards - taking pride in your environment
· Assisting with product deliveries – counting, unloading and storing in the correct spaces
Training will be provided in all of these areas to ensure you have the information you need to give every visitor the perfect experience.
What we’re looking for from you:
Essential
· Energy and enthusiasm
· A passion for providing exceptional customer service
· Someone who enjoys buzzing environments, is proactive, organised and has great attention to detail
· Great interpersonal and communication skills
· The ability to multitask and remain calm under pressure
· Availability to work weekends, school holidays and, very occasionally, evenings
Desirable
· Experience in public-facing roles, particularly in retail, museums, tourism, leisure or visitor attractions
· Knowledge of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and SS Great Britain’s rich history
