Project Zulu is a charitable initiative supporting educational development in partner schools in township and rural communities in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

In May 2025, we are thrilled to welcome the sixth Project Zulu choir to the UK. Comprised of 20 pupils from Sipheni Senior Primary School and Sithobelumthetho Primary School in the Madadeni Township, the choir are a spectacle of sight and sound with their incredibly talented singing, traditional Zulu dancing and vibrant costumes. Using their incredible musical talent, they will inspire audiences across the Southwest through concerts, pop up performances and busking in cities. Visiting schools across the region they will interact with local children offering cultural exchange opportunities and musical workshops. The tour will culminate with a grand Project Zulu Gala Concert featuring Britain’s Got Talent finalist, Innocent Masuku at the Bristol Beacon on Thursday 5 June. All funds raised whilst in the UK are sent straight back to their South African schools to support sustainable educational development projects.

Whilst touring the Southwest, the choir children aged 10-14 years, and their teachers, live with local host families for the three-week tour. Hosted in pairs, the South African children have found this to be an invaluable experience, becoming part of a UK family and forming connections that have lasted long beyond the dates of a choir tour. Bristol families have expressed that hosting Project Zulu children has been an eye-opening and life-changing experience, creating cherished memories for both the parents and their own children. Some families have even since travelled to South Africa to visit their guests, visiting the schools we support and meeting their wider family and community.

As a charitable project, we are unable to offer monetary compensation to our wonderful hosts. However, with the cost-of-living crisis affecting everyone, we are assembling a package of discounts and offers to support our 13 Bristol host families. This package may include discounts or vouchers for shops, restaurants, attractions, and entertainment venues across the region. Any support will be greatly appreciated, as it will help our hosts care for their guests while showcasing all the wonderful experiences the Southwest has to offer.

If you would like to discuss how your business can support our Host Families Package or the wider choir tour please contact ProjectZulu@uwe.ac.uk
