As the calendar turns to 2025, Bristol Community Ferry Boats, a beloved locally owned cooperative, is charting an inspiring course for another year of service to the people of Bristol.
This year carries even greater significance, as the United Nations officially launches the International Year of Co-operatives (IYC) 2025 – a global celebration of enterprises that put people and purpose before profit. To mark this momentous occasion, Bristol Community Ferry Boats is expanding its free community trip programme, offering inclusive experiences to individuals and groups who face social and financial barriers to enjoying the harbour.
Following a successful pilot in late 2024 that partnered with 15 local charities and community groups, the initiative will scale up in 2025 with 18 free trips, ensuring even more people can share in the magic of Bristol’s waters.
Real Stories, Real Impact
Emmaus, a charity supporting individuals who have experienced homelessness, described their trip as a rare and meaningful opportunity:
“It was an opportunity to experience something they would never have been able to pay for themselves. They learnt new facts about Bristol, enjoyed viewing the harbour at night and had a relaxing evening. It was a chance for them to have a break from their worries and have an enjoyable time.”
Home-Start, a network supporting families with young children, shared the programme’s impact:
“Many of the families we support do not have the financial means to take their children on these kinds of outings. Particularly at Christmas time with the added pressure to do as many activities as possible with your children. This trip took the pressure off and gave families a chance to do something fun with their kids.”
Expanding Horizons in 2025
Roisin Tobin-Brooke, Co-Director of Bristol Ferry Boats, expressed excitement for the year ahead:
“As a community business, sharing the joy of the harbour with those who may not have had the chance to board with us before is at the heart of what we do. We’re thrilled to announce that in celebration of the International Year of Co-operatives, we will expand our programme to offer 18 free community trips in 2025. We’re also calling on local businesses to get involved by sponsoring a free community trip. Together, we can reach even more people and ensure everyone gets to experience the beauty of Bristol’s harbourside.”
