Mendip Activity Centre took over ownership of YHA Cheddar keeping the site open as an exciting place for people to stay, preserving a popular spot for school trips, holiday stays, and group adventures in the heart of Cheddar. The historic hostel will now become part of the Mendip Adventure brand, offering visitors an ideal base to explore Cheddar, Somerset and the Mendip Hills, all while retaining its Youth Hostels Association (YHA) status and spirit.

Nestled in the Mendip Hills and just a short walk from the world-famous Cheddar Gorge, YHA Cheddar offers unique, character-filled accommodation in a large Victorian house and adjoining annex. This makes it a perfect destination for families, individuals, and groups looking for an inspiring short break or outdoor adventure.

YHA Cheddar will continue as a YHA (England & Wales) franchise, maintaining the values and mission that make YHA so impactful. As operators, the Mendip team are committed to bringing more visitors to experience Cheddar’s charm. True to the YHA mission—“where you go changes who you become”—this hostel will provide young people and visitors with the opportunity for real adventure, whether they’re here for educational trips, family holidays, or a base whilst exploring the local natural wonders.

With the addition of YHA Cheddar, Mendip Activity Centre can offer an even broader range of school residential trips. Cheddar is ideal for geography field trips and adventure-packed weekends, featuring activities like iconic Rock Climbing, Hiking through stunning natural landscapes and nearby Kayaking. Mendip’s experienced instructors will ensure each trip is safe, educational, and tailored to different age groups, providing the right level of challenge and fun for primary, secondary, college and youth groups.

David Eddins, Managing Director of Mendip Activity Centre, shares his excitement about the acquisition:“We’re thrilled to work alongside such a respected national organisation and to have the chance to save this iconic hostel from closure. YHA Cheddar has been a staple Somerset venue for as long as I can remember, and we’re honoured to bring it into the Mendip Adventure family. We’ve worked closely with YHA Cheddar for years, and now, as we step into an operational role, our whole team can’t wait to get started.”
James Blake, Chief Executive of YHA (England & Wales) said: “We are delighted to retain YHA Cheddar within the YHA network through our new franchise model. Partnering with businesses like Mendip Activity Centre enables young people and their families to continue to access the physical and mental health benefits of the outdoors in stunning locations like Cheddar, through the provision of affordable accommodation. ”
