Joined by the HM Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Mr Mohammed Saddiq and welcomed by Andrew Foulkes, CEO of Hospitality at The Newt, Lord Hendy unveiled the official plaque to an audience of key members of the local community, friends of The Newt, and local press. The event concluded with a delicious lunch, accompanied by a military band.
Celebrating the Golden Age of railway travel, The Creamery is housed within the original milk factory at Castle Cary, where in 1912 local farmers would deliver churns of milk to be made into cheese, ready for transport to London via the railway line. Having fallen into disrepair, this slice of industrial history has now been given a new life by The Newt in Somerset following a four-year restoration, now offering the most elevated rail side experience in the UK.
This opening marks The Newt in Somerset’s continuing commitment to make a positive impact on the local community, whilst cementing Castle Cary’s position as the principal gateway to Somerset, serving travellers from London Paddington, Penzance, Plymouth and Bristol.
Andrew Foulkes, CEO of Hospitality at The Newt in Somerset: ‘We are delighted to have officially launched The Creamery at Castle Cary railway station today, and in such special way – joined by the HM Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Mr Mohammed Saddiq and Lord Hendy. The opening signifies much more than a restaurant and farm shop but our committed supporting the community and we’re thrilled to create a space where both locals and visitors can come to enjoy the best of what our region has to offer’
