Tomorrow (Thursday 26 September 2024), St Nicks Market will be adding to its vibrant food and drinks offering with the grand opening of FoodSourceBS1. Consisting of three brand-new, high quality units installed in the covered market, with three diverse businesses taking on the exciting opportunity to provide a unique dining experience for the residents of Bristol.

The three new businesses are Red Tiger (Malaysian street food), Bristol Calabash (Jamaican snacks and drinks), and Ceylon & Beyond (Sri Lankan street food).

Bristol City Council partnered with the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority to successfully bid for £500,000 of Government funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The market has used this opportunity to help bolster the local hospitality sector, offering up this new opportunity to three up-and-coming local businesses.

This grant, and its subsequent investment into FoodsourceBS1, aims to continue the revival of this historic area, and put St Nicks Market firmly on the UK’s culinary map.

Councillor Andrew Brown, Chair of the Economy and Skills Committee, said: "I'm delighted the team has been able to access grant funding to refresh the covered market, build three new units, and further extend the diversity of food offerings within St Nicks Market, adding to the attraction of this key part of the city centre. The markets provide a home to dozens of small businesses and traders, and bring vibrancy and life to the Old City. This project not only adds to the experience of visitors but also connects with other schemes that support vocational training and 1 to 1 support that helps residents into work."

Cameron Cheek, Markets Manager at St Nicks Market, said: “We pride ourselves on our trader’s authenticity and the international food offering at the market. We are extremely pleased to welcome three new traders to the St Nicks Market community. The community spirit among the traders fosters a really supportive environment and we can’t wait to see what Red Tiger, Ceylon & Beyond, and Bristol Calabash add to the plate!”

Tenants of the new units will also be nominated for The Bristol Eating Better Award (BEBA), which celebrates Bristol’s varied choices for healthy and sustainable food options. Winners of this year’s award will join 340 other Bristol businesses that have already achieved the award, from cafes and restaurants to market stalls and takeaways.

Hari, Owner of Red Tiger, said: "Our journey, from hosting food nights with friends and family to setting up a small stall at St Nicks Night Market, has always been driven by our deep love for food, especially Malaysian street food, which tells the rich, diverse story of its people.

“Launching in this new space feels like the next chapter in our story. It’s not just about the food, it’s about bringing a piece of Malaysia to a city that has truly become our second home. We believe Red Tiger can add something special to Bristol’s vibrant food scene, and we’re excited to take this journey to the next level at the iconic St Nicks Market."
