Artist and designer Norman Gosney returns to his hometown of Bristol to debut his latest exhibition, "Triggerines & Sentimentos," at THE PIT, a new gallery space 19th-21st September, offering a unique blend of nostalgia and contemporary art.
"Triggerines & Sentimentos" explores the enduring allure of small figurines, from the ancient "Venus of Willendorf" to modern-day pop culture icons. Gosney's work delves into the sentimental and often kitschy statuettes that once adorned the mantlepieces and wall units of generations, reflecting deep-seated attitudes and affections. His exhibition aims to re-contextualise these familiar figures, updating them to reflect contemporary sensibilities while retaining their original charm and function.
Gosney's artistic process involves recycling and renewing figurines found in dumpsters, charity stores, and jumble sales. By incorporating discarded figures from comics, advertising, and even Disney, he offers new interpretations of old dialogues, reinventing icons of the past in today's vastly different world.
Born and raised in Redland, Bristol, Norman Gosney has enjoyed international success as a designer, nightclub operator, entrepreneur, artist, and performer. In the 60s and 70s, Bristol, particularly Clifton, served as a nurturing incubator for his wide-ranging creative endeavours, including rock bands, graphic design, theatre, local politics, and more.
In the late 70s, Gosney relocated to New York City, where he became a prominent figure in the nightclub scene, working on many groundbreaking NY clubs of the 80s. His career expanded to cities like Tokyo, Munich, and Miami, and he also served as the main Art Director for Marvel Comics in 1983/84. In the early 90s, after a brief stint in Belize, he returned to Manhattan, opening The Slipper Room, the first modern Burlesque and performance club.
Gosney's adventures continued in Shanghai, where he and his partner Amelia Kallman opened Chinatown, the country's first Neo-Vaudeville nightclub. Their experiences are detailed in Kallman's award-winning memoir, "Diary of a Shanghai Showgirl." Now residing in East London, Gosney continues to pursue his passions as a designer, artist, and enthusiastic motorcyclist.
