Members of Porto University TUNA male choir have been invited by Bristol’s twinning - the Bristol Oporto Association to entertain the people of Bristol.
They will be here in the city from 8 through to 11 April as part of the twinning’s 40th anniversary celebratory week.
The twinning/ city partnership agreement was signed 4o years ago on 11 April 1984 by Mayors both here and in Porto.
The music performances are extremely lively and of mainly traditional music. The 12 plus singers / musicians will have brought and will play their musical instruments (guitar, drum, double bass, accordion and tambourine) to accompany. They will be performing in several outdoor and indoor locations in and around Bristol’s city centre.
Traditionally these TUNA (nothing to do with fish) choirs are either male or female. They sing for their supper in the style of the old troubadours. Entertaining the public outdoors on the streets in many University cities in Portugal. They play as well at Festivals and to represent their own University.
Weather permitting they will be singing/playing on Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th between 1pm and 4pm in and around the old town, city centre and harbour areas.
The singers can be easily seen wearing traditional black and white colours and some with huge capes. They carry an enormous flag of their University. Quite a spectacle.
They also will sing at an especially arranged short concert at St Georges on Wednesday 10 April in the afternoon. (ticket only - sold out)
On Thursday 11 April there will be an official civic celebration of this anniversary event on College Green at 11am in front of invited guests including the Lord Mayor, Lord Lieutenant, High Sheriff and many supporters and friends of the twinning association.
Porto is one of Bristol’s 7 flourishing twinnings. A reminder in times when there is much speedy change and new elements to life that continuity and special friendships can also stand the test of time and still offer much to us all.
