This largely non-verbal performance is presented in a relaxed environment and explores the barriers of attitudes, social etiquette and behaviour, as audiences follow the journey of someone dealing with the unspoken rules that surround us all.

A Daryl & Co and Half Moon co-production, ‍Boxed In is a heartfelt story about being made to feel naughty, just because the rules don’t make sense. Appearing for eight performances at The Egg, this is a collaboration by a ground-breaking disabled-led theatre company and the UK’s leading small-scale young people’s venue and touring company. The show is accessible to a range of people, including deaf, hard of hearing and non-English speakers. An easy-read synopsis, audio description introduction and touch tours will also be available.

Producer of Boxed In, Chris Elwell said: “Boxed In offers a poignant exploration of diversity for the very young. How do you know a barrier is there if you can’t see it? And if you can't see it, how can you remove it? Boxed In started life back in 2019 with participatory activities at Globe Primary School, in Bethnal Green. Often work that explores inclusion will look at physical barriers, and can show how you could turn stairs into a ramp for example - making the world of the play accessible. With this show, we're exploring that within our society there are lots of barriers that are unseen, people feel ‘boxed in’ as they try to navigate their everyday lives. There are lots of things that are preventing people from taking part, often simply due to people's attitudes, or the unspoken rules that we have as a society”.

Performer and Director of Boxed In, Daryl Beeton said: “If you've got a physical disability, if you’ve got a physical impairment, then people understand. But actually, if you've got a hidden impairment, or an invisible disability, then it's a lot harder for people to understand why you need to do things in a certain way. That is where the play starts, slowly unpicking them.”
