Bristol-based theatre company, Show of Strength, has a brand new walking tour celebrating the life of the legendary Cary Grant. In partnership with Cary Comes Home Festival, fans of the famed actor can walk the streets that Archie knew as a boy and returned to again and again for the rest of his life on Friday 29 - Saturday 30 March, and Monday 1 April 2024. The 90 minute tour starts at the Statue of Cary Grant and ends in Castle Park, and tickets can be purchased on the Show of Strength website.
Taking place right here in Cary’s stomping grounds, the tour, Raising Cary Grant: The Bristol footsteps of Archie Leach, will lead guests through the theatres and cinemas, hotels and restaurants and the iconic Bristol harbour. Led by actor Chris Wapp, the tour is an extraordinary story that’s threaded through with secrets and lies as enduring as Archie’s Bristol landscapes, all of which helped form and transform him into a Hollywood star and style icon.
Born in Bristol on 18 January 1904, this year marks the 120th anniversary of Cary Grant, with Show of Strength taking us back to the humble beginnings of Archie Leach, who once worked backstage at the Bristol Hippodrome when he was 14 years old. Years later, the movie star and icon, Cary Grant, would lunch at Harvey’s Restaurant on Denmark Street and buy his spectacles at Dunscombe’s on the corner of St. Augustine’s Parade.
Tickets for Raising Cary Grant: The Bristol Footsteps of Archie Leach are available on the Show of Strength website and is in partnership with the Cary Comes Home festival. Tickets cost £12, lasting 90 minutes and the tour is suitable for wheelchair users. Starting at 18:00 pm, the meeting point is at the Statue of Cary Grant, Millennium Promenade, Bristol, BS1 5DB.
