Tickets are selling so well for the Slapstick screen comedy festival’s 20th silent film gala that with three months to go before the Hugh Bonneville hosted event takes place it is opening up more of the 2,000 seat Beacon Hall to meet demand.

Slapstick’s founder and director Chris Daniels says: “Because our 2024 Gala on Friday 16 February will be our first in the newly-refurbished Beacon Hall; the first we’ve been able to put on with a full orchestra since 2018 and there’s a cost of living crises, we worried take-up wouldn’t be enough to fill all seats. But even before we get the usual rush of people buying Gala tickets as Christmas/ New Year gifts for themselves or others,  interest is already so strong that we’ve decided to make all 1,866 seats available.”

He added: ”We’re now looking forward to a night of absolute joy – a packed house all laughing together after Downton Abbey and Paddington films star Hugh Bonneville introduces big screen showings of hilarious shorts featuring Buster Keaton and Laurel & Hardy followed by Charlie Chaplin timeless masterpiece, The Gold Rush (1925), accompanied live by the Bristol Ensemble.”

The Gala will be the flagship event of Slapstick’s 20th festival, running from 14 to 18 February 2024 at venues including Watershed, Bristol Old Vic and the Bristol Beacon’s Lantern Hall and foyer as well as its main space. More elements in the festival’s 2024 line-up are due to be unveiled on next week.
