Throughout Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month, landmarks and homes across the UK and globe will light up purple to put a spotlight on pancreatic cancer, a disease that deserves more attention.

Organised largely by individuals affected by pancreatic cancer, the campaign is not only a means to raise vital awareness but a way to remember loved ones who have sadly died and acknowledge those living with and beyond the disease.

The Grand Pier's illuminating gesture is in support of Jason P Belcher, who will take part in a cycling journey in the North Somerset Youth Cricket League Club, concluding with 24 laps around The Grand Pier on Thursday 16th November 2023, alongside his friend Jason Smith. Their aim is to raise funds for the charity.

In 2021, Jason previously undertook a 24-hour charity cycle ride in Weston-super-Mare to raise awareness for Pancreatic Cancer UK in memory of his mother, Marjorie Belcher, who sadly passed away from the disease in February 2021. His efforts helped raise an impressive amount of just over £3,000.

Katie Robertson, PR & Marketing Manager at The Grand Pier, said: "I hope that by lighting The Grand Pier in purple, we will help shed light on a disease that many people still know so very little about."

Nearly 10,500 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the UK each year and shockingly, less than 7% of those diagnosed will survive beyond 5 years. The disease currently receives just 3% of UK cancer research funding, despite being the UK’s fifth biggest cancer killer.

Purple Lights for pancreatic cancer is supported by UK based charities Pancreatic Cancer UK, Pancreatic Cancer Action and Planets.
