How do we create a future we would be happy to leave our children and grandchildren? Decisions we make today shape the world of tomorrow. Human advances in technology and healthcare continue to enrich societies, so could it be that far from them facing a dystopian nightmare, the future offers more grounds for optimism than we thought?

The World in 2050 series at BRLSI, running on Fridays between the 16 June and the 4 August, enlists an exciting roster of speakers providing insight into our collective destinies and considers what we need to understand today to ensure that our world thrives tomorrow. With diverse topics covering the global economy, society, politics, governance, environmental issues, technology, innovation and AI, this series is designed to shed a positive light on the future, whilst exploring practical ways to mitigate the negatives.

The series kicks off with a keynote lecture on The World in 2050 from author and awardwinning journalist Hamish McRae, former financial editor of The Guardian and now a leading commentator at The Independent. His introductory lecture provides both a framework on how to think about the near future and the key issues we need to be considering now.

The series continues with talks on the global economy, positive strategies to combat climate change, an informed look at what technology and innovation will be shaping our world in 2050, before the series culminates with a very timely lecture from Professor John Lennox on both the benefits and risks of Artificial Intelligence.

As a precursor to the series, a student forum from Bath Spa University will consider what their own hopes and concerns are regarding their futures, and their conclusions will inform a thread of discussion throughout the wider series. Audiences for each of the talks will be encouraged to share their own ideas via a series of polls, and at the close of the series BRLSI will be looking at how the two sets of responses compare.

Join BRLSI for a series exploring how we empower ourselves to become the change we want to see in the world!

Audience members can join the lecture live at Queen Square Bath or enjoy the event online via a livestream. Each talk takes place at 7:30pm. Tickets are £4 for members and £8 for non-members.
