The Theatre Royal Bath Theatre School return to The Egg Theatre’s stage this April for a run of 5 performances, with a brand-new adaptation of The Selfish Giant, written by Bath-based Sam Kenyon-Hamp. Based on the classic modern fairy tale written by Oscar Wilde, performances run from Tuesday 4th to Thursday 6th April, where audiences aged 6 years and over will be taken on a journey celebrating the joy of friendship and exploring the wonders of childhood imagination and the meaning of ‘home’.
The Selfish Giant is devised by and features 17 cast members and 10 TRBTS backstage crew, including lighting and sound operators, stage management and costume and prop makers. The company, who all come from Bath and Chippenham, include performers aged between 11 to 13 years and backstage crew aged up to 18 years old.
Work on The Selfish Giant began in September 2022, when Sam Kenyon Hamp (writer and Theatre Royal Bath Education Officer) began exploring the story’s themes with the students.
Writer, Sam Kenyon-Hamp said: “As we started to dissect the fairy tale we realised that we wanted to tell this story in our own way and in a world that felt completely ours. These young people have built this world brick by brick: its history, its rules, what they believe and who they are within it. Every single one of them has put so much of themselves into this process and have such a fundamental understanding of the play, that whenever they take to the stage you can feel the energy buzzing off of them.”
Director Olly Langdon is best known for his work with Kilter Theatre Company, for whom he produces, writes, directs, devises and performs, as well as facilitating workshops. Olly has worked internationally as a performer and, since 2006, has been based in his home city of Bath. Composer Alex Heane is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and sound designer who hails from Cornwall. He has toured nationally in theatre shows with companies including the National Theatre and Wise Children, as well as playing and recording in a number of bands. London-based designer Caitlin Abbott has worked nationwide and internationally, as far afield as Bangladesh and Eastern Europe. She was one of the twelve finalists for the prestigious Linbury Prize for Stage Design in 2019, and an RSC Assistant Designer from 2019 to 2020. This will be the sixth time Caitlin has worked with students from Theatre Royal Bath Theatre School and Bath Theatre Academy.
