One of the Britain’s most important collections of modern religious art, the Methodist Modern Art Collection (MMAC) is coming to Bristol and will be on display at Victoria Methodist Church, Clifton from 20 February to 8 April.

This exhibition is particularly exciting because it is the first time that works from the collection are being displayed alongside artefacts from other faith traditions.

The title of the exhibition ‘Articles of Faith’ suggests those beliefs which people of faith hold close to our hearts. We do believe different things, yet we share so much, hence the strapline ‘Where our paths meet’. We hope that those who have no faith will feel equally included as the exhibition is organised into 8 clusters which relate to our common human spirituality; hope, suffering, hospitality, relationship and mystery, justice and peace, text and story, life and death, compassion and service.

As Rev Richard Sharples, the minister at Victoria says “The whole project has been one long conversation on the part of the planning group, which has widened and deepened as we have been joined by people from faith traditions other than Christianity.”

The exhibition itself offers a unique opportunity to organise a programme of events and these include:

• talks on art and faith

• workshops organised by our Hindu, Jewish, and Muslim partners

• a schools art competition and parallel exhibition of student art

• workshops to enable children to explore the exhibition and respond to it

• poetry evening and drama

• music concerts

The MMAC is a treasure that we are pleased and proud to be displaying in this context. There are over 50 works, including some by well-known artists such as Graham Sutherland, Elisabeth Frink, William Roberts, Patrick Heron and most recently Maggi Hambling.
