Bristol Airport opens new electric vehicle charging hub for airline and business partners

Bristol Airport has announced a collaboration with Jet2.com on a new electric vehicle charging hub after securing funding from the Airport Carbon Transition (ACT) programme.

Earlier in the year Bristol Airport announced the Airport Carbon Transition (ACT) programme, a fund launched to kick start and fast track decarbonisation initiatives in the South West. The programme supports initiatives and projects reducing direct and indirect emissions from Airport infrastructure with Bristol Airport being a test bed location. 

A starting fund of £250,000 was open to businesses and organisations to bid and apply for funding with the projects being considered through an application and interview process. 

Since the ACT programme was set up, through the selection process Bristol Airport is collaborating with five organisations supporting innovation projects from the first round of funding. These organisations include Buckinghamshire New University, easyJet, Jet2.com, The National Wildflower Centre and Johns Associates Limited.

Partnering with Jet2.com – funding has been used to develop the infrastructure to accelerate the electrification of airside vehicles and equipment at Bristol Airport. A new airside electric vehicle charging hub is now operational. Currently consisting of four dedicated Jet2.com electric vehicle charging bays and two electric vehicle charging bays for Business Partners, ensuring charger points are always available.

“We are delighted that another project has been completed with funding from the ACT Programme.  The collaboration with Jet2.com in providing the electric charging hub in the busy airside aircraft operating area, assists with aircraft turnarounds. The range and breadth of projects we are working on is staggering, including new to market technologies, university research programmes, carbon sequestration and energy or propulsion generation.”

The hub will play a critical role in enabling us to further reduce our ground-based emissions, which is a stated aim in our sustainability strategy. As well as addressing sustainability at every stage of the journey, including on the ground as well as in the air and in resort, steps such as this are a demonstration of how committed we are to taking immediate and tangible actions to make flying more sustainable.”
