Road closures at A4 Upper Bristol Road and Marlborough Lane

Residents and motorists in Bath are being notified of the start of works on the next phase of the Upper Bristol Road active travel scheme.

Bath & North East Somerset Council will begin the works on 22 September at Marlborough Lane for an expected three weeks as part of a scheme to improve routes for cycling, wheeling and walking across the city.

Ahead of this and not related to the active travel scheme, A4 Upper Bristol Road will close opposite Marlborough Lane from 6am on 21 September until 8pm on 22 September in order to place a mobile crane on the highway as part of works on the Pegasus Bath Leat development. A road closure is required because a previously unknown cellar has recently been discovered, and its location means the crane has to be positioned where it will block the road. 

This next phase of works on the A4 Upper Bristol Road active travel scheme will include alterations to the Marlborough Lane junction layout, with extended kerbs and dropped kerbs for better pedestrian access.

The kerb on both sides of the street will be extended to reduce the distance pedestrians have to cross and to discourage motorists from turning into Marlborough Lane at inappropriate speeds.

Dropped kerbs will also be installed on either side to ease pedestrian access, particularly for those with mobility impairment.

Marlborough Lane will be closed to all vehicles at its junction with Upper Bristol Road during the works when signs are in place. The works are expected to take three weeks.

There will be a signed traffic diversion in place around Royal Victoria Park. Residents and their visitors will still be able to access properties and parking bays at the junction by approaching Marlborough Lane from the north.

Works will be carried out between 7:30am and 5pm Monday to Friday and between 7:30am and 4pm on Saturday. Further details can be found on the dedicated webpage here. 

Councillor Sarah Warren, cabinet member for Climate and Sustainable Travel, said: “We know that the active travel scheme works will cause some disruption and we have written to residents and businesses to give advance warning. This is an important scheme that will reduce congestion and improve air quality in the city as part of an improved walking and cycling network across the district. Thank you for your patience and understanding during the works.”

There will also be a signed traffic diversion for the installation of the mobile crane on Upper Bristol Road on 21 and 22 September. Pedestrian and local vehicle access will be maintained.
