Churchill gyratory open for bank holiday weekend despite roadworks

Bath and North East Somerset Council is co-ordinating with Network Rail to carry out planned roadworks and maintenance to Churchill gyratory in Bath’s city centre, also known as Churchill roundabout. 

The road is being resurfaced and some utility covers will be upgraded by Bath & North East Somerset Council, starting from Monday 30 May, however no road closures will take place over the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee bank holiday weekend. 
 
The first phase of the works, which is resurfacing by Bath & North East Somerset Council, is expected to take approximately seven nights and will require the gyratory to be closed between 7pm and 7am. Diversions will be in place to direct traffic and local bus companies have been notified. 
 
Motorists are being advised that road closures are likely to cause delays in this part of the city.
 
Councillor Manda Rigby, cabinet member for Transport, said: “This work is necessary to refresh the road surface and improve safety. We know that Churchill gyratory is a very busy junction in the centre of Bath so unfortunately there will be some delays to traffic. We’re carrying out the majority of the works overnight to reduce any disruption, and we’re pleased to say that no work will take place from early morning Thursday until after the Jubilee bank holiday weekend.” 
 
“We’re working with Network Rail to align our projects and complete the works as quickly as possible, but unfortunately, we can’t carry out our works at the same time as we’re limited by working space and requirements for equipment on site. Thank you for your patience while we complete these essential works.”
 
Network Rail will be starting the second phase, a £800,000 refurbishment of Claverton Street railway bridge, which sits above Churchill gyratory. The work is needed to revive the bridge and ensure the continued safe and reliable running of the railway, extending its lifespan for another 25 years.
 
The refurbishment is expected to take approximately four months, between June and October, and work will mostly be carried out under overnight road closures.
