Celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee with the National Trust

Her Majesty the Queen is the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee and the National Trust will be commemorating this historic occasion in a number of ways at the places the charity cares for across the during the bank holiday weekend from 2-5 June.

15 places across the South West will be joining other landmarks around the country in lighting beacons on 2 June, from Chapel Carn Brea, Boscastle and Trelissick in Cornwall to Wellington Monument, Glastonbury Tor and Dunkery Beacon in Somerset.

A host of Jubilee events are taking place across the South West, from Jubilee themed picnics, Jubilee trails with knitted crowns guiding you along the way to live music performances all topped off with metres and metres of bunting adorning National Trust places all across the South West.

The Trust has also taking part in The Queen's Green Canopy, an initiative which encourages everyone to 'Plant a Tree for the Jubilee'. Hundreds of trees are being planted throughout the year at Trust places to include many exciting projects such as recreating tree avenues.

Jubilee events in the South West include;

Cornwall:
At Trengwainton and in partnership with the local parish, the team are putting on an exhibition with other local organisations to display info photos and memories from the Queen’s reign.  Visitors will be able to make their own bunting and help to decorate the Royal Meadow during half term week.

Antony nr Torpoint, are having a right Royal Garden party with games, jubilee party packs and live music.  There will be an official raising of the flag ceremony at 1pm each day to the National Anthem.

Dorset:
The team on Brownsea Island in Dorset are having a Jubilee quiz and crafts event.

At Kingston Lacy, the property will be decorated for the Jubilee and visitors can lend a hand by helping to make some more bunting to put on display, there will also be music on the lawn on the Sunday.

Devon:
Arlington Court will be having a week-long garden party with a special jubilee cake on offer in the tea-room. Bring your own picnic, enjoy games on the lawn and have a go at decorating your own bunting.

At Knightshayes there will be Jubilee flower arrangements created with flowers from the gardens. Crafty Kings and Queen’s activities over the Jubilee weekend and Uncle Tacko’s Promenade Entertainment in the formal garden on the Sunday along with giant games in the formal gardens throughout the week.

Gloucestershire:
Dyrham Park near Bath and Bristol are putting on a Kings and Queen’s children’s trail along with live music and an assortment of fairground and giant garden games for everyone to enjoy. Visitors can turn themselves into King William or Queen Mary thanks to peep-through boards and there will be different nature activities for children, such as seed-planting and decorating nature crowns.

At Hidcote in Gloucestershire, visitors can picnic on the Great Lawn and make the most of some of the games supplied by the property while sipping a Pimm’s from the café.

You can celebrate the Queen’s jubilee with family and friends at Snowshill in Gloucestershire. Explore the family trail in the garden, get creative with art boxes, have a picnic in the orchard or enjoy a traditional cream tea at the café.

Somerset:
At Tyntesfield visitors will be encouraged to picnic in the gardens over the weekend which will be decorated with bunting and handily placed picnic blanket. Live music will be provided by local young musicians.

At Dunster there will be a Jubilee themed trail - each point of the trail represents a decade of the 70 years reign, with activities and challenges and a crown prize. Knitted crowns at each marker created and donated in partnership with local knitting group.

At Barrington Court the Wessex Military Concert Band will be performing to celebrate the Jubilee weekend.

At Prior Park Landscape Garden in Bath, there will be a Kings and Queens themed quiz with links to Prior Park's history. There will be some games and decorations and the chance to picnic in the beautiful grounds.

Wiltshire:
The front of Mompesson House will be lit up every evening for the duration of the Jubilee weekend celebrations creating a murmuration of reds, whites and blues. During normal open hours the dining room in the house will be transported back to the 1950s with the table set for a replica buffet from the Coronation Day in 1953. At Avebury, garden party and blossom themed family activities will be taking place in the garden until 5 June.

Hilary McGrady, Director-General of the National Trust, said: “As part of the celebrations, the Trust is proud to take part in the lighting of historic beacons, from Mow Top with its views of the Staffordshire Moorlands, to Cornwall's Chapel Corn Brea, Britain's westernmost hill. They will continue a royal tradition, with beacons illuminating the landscape just as they did for Her Majesty's Golden and Diamond Jubilees.”
