Eat Your Way to Australia at Brunel's SS Great Britain
All through half term, 12- 4pm on board the ship.
Could you survive a 60 day voyage on rations? As the lowest class voyagers aboard the SS Great Britain, steerage passengers didn't have much to look forward to at mealtimes. When they boarded the ship to Australia in the 1850s, they didn't just face a gruelling two month voyage, they were also about to endure one of the chewiest diets in history!
This half term, SS Great Britain have recreated the steerage ration from the 1855 Passenger Act, allowing you to step into the shoes of a Victorian voyager and discover what, where and how they dined on board the ship. Could you stomach rations of salt meat and ships biscuits – or would you rather go hungry?
The activity is included with entry to Brunel's SS Great Britain.
