Following the widely celebrated opening of Dr Semmelweis last week, Bristol Old Vic today introduces its full 2022 programme of work, designed to rebuild and renew the organisation after the pandemic.
The programme builds on Bristol Old Vic’s ambition to produce live theatre of international renown while championing the value of creative opportunities for every person from every community in Bristol, and forging a path for talent development which will feed the creative industries of the future. The plan for post-pandemic recovery has three strands:
• Rebuild the core of our business with blockbusting theatre from Dr. Semmelweis to The Nutcracker.
• Throw open the doors – from pioneering engagement through to a radical ticket giveaway for new visitors.
• Transform our business with a string of digital releases from Touching the Void to Hamlet.
After 12 years at the helm of the prestigious theatre, overseeing the renewal of its mission, programme and building, Tom Morris has announced that he will leave in the autumn of 2022 and that this future-focused season will be his last at Bristol Old Vic.
“The future of Bristol Old Vic has never looked fuller of excitement, opportunity, and enriching creative challenge,” says Morris. “This theatre, with all its history and potential is a superb place to explore what theatre might be in the future and what role it might play in shaping our society over the next decade. This season is just a foundation for that change. I can’t wait to see what unforeseen discoveries and creations emerge from it in the coming years.”
