Luxury Bristol based hotel, Berwick Lodge, has appointed Sustainability Adviser, Emily Nice, to roll out its long-term sustainability and wellbeing strategy. Berwick is committed to achieving best environmental and social sustainability practice, for the benefit of their guests, staff, and the planet.
Emily graduated from UCL with a BSc in Geography. Her degree had a strong focus on climate change and the environment, particularly looking at the physical science as well as its connection to the human – essentially, how climate change impacts us and how we've impacted it. With this knowledge, including frightening facts and figures about the impact of climate change on future generations, Emily felt she ‘couldn’t not’ try to help, so jumped for joy when the Sustainability Adviser role was advertised at Berwick Lodge.
Having identified that most of their emissions stem from their bedrooms, Berwick have made eco-friendly decisions to minimise this, such as reducing energy use by offering robes on request; partnering with ‘Who Gives a Crap’ toilet paper who donate 50% of their profits to improve sanitation in third world countries; reduction of single use plastic with WWF recyclable coffee pods and refillable toiletries from Bramley – a brand based locally in Somerset; a type 2 electric car charging point that’s complimentary to overnight guests.
The gardens are well respected, and the gardening team strive to maintain its natural environment. No pesticides are used in the gardens, only organic treatments. Wildflower seeds have been scattered, the colours of which encourage butterflies to visit and a woodland ‘bug hotel' now lives on the edge of the gardens. Berwick’s latest project involves reinstating the pond and woodland area at the end of their garden, where they’ll incorporate a mindfulness area for staff and guests, to open in Spring 2022.
“I’m delighted to have joined Sarah and the team at Berwick Lodge to work on their sustainability adjustments. Personally, I love the idea that we can all make a big difference even with seemingly small changes. And how it's not about being 'perfect' in sustainability, but about doing as much as we can when we can. We don't need a handful of people doing it perfectly, but millions of people doing it imperfectly & trying their best. That’s what we are doing at Berwick Lodge“, says Emily
Sarah Arikan, Owner and General Manager at Berwick Lodge adds “We are aware that all of our actions here have the potential for negative consequence on the environment, and that even the smallest of changes can make a huge difference. With Emily’s support and guidance, we are stepping up our mission to continuously improve our sustainability practices throughout all our business activity, with changes that make both economic and environmental sense, whilst also improving experience for our guests”
