Romeo and Juliet
12-15 Jan
Press Night Thu 13 Jan
The Weston Studio
Directed by Young SixSix Director Julia Head

Bristol Old Vic’s theatre-makers of the future take over The Weston Studio theatre this week with their production of Romeo and Juliet.

Directed by Julia Head, this bold production will be a relentless unfolding of the world’s most famous love story, set against the violent chaos of this broken world.

Verona. Right here.
Two households. Your neighbours.
A pair of star-crossed lovers. Your friends.

They enter. You watch them. We know how this ends.
This is a race, no one can win.
They will spend the whole play running from their fate.

It will not work.
They have to die.
This is a tragedy.

The production combines the forces of Bristol Old Vic's award-winning Young Company and Young SixSix theatre companies, with actors aged between 8 and 21.

Speaking today, Engagement Director Lucy Hunt said: 'We’re so pleased to be bringing together two brilliant groups of young people to put on this production of Romeo and Juliet. They’ve all inputted massively into the rehearsal process and creation of the show, which is what being part of Young Company and Young SixSix is all about. They’ve found a way to make this 400-year-old play feel current and about the issues that matter to them. We can’t wait to get it on stage.'

Inspired by the production, Bristol Old Vic have also been running a brand-new project – Two Households – to explore the impact of violence on communities. The Two Households project has been working with young people from across Bristol, exploring the themes of Romeo and Juliet. Funds have been raised through The Big Give Campaign and cover everything from transport costs and refreshments to bursaries and workshop practitioners over the ten-week project.

Engagement Producer Hattie De Santis said: ‘The Two Households project helps us reach out to different community groups, school groups and young people that have been affected by knife crime in some way in their lives. We’re using Romeo and Juliet as a stimulus to engage with those young people and explore the text, creativity and those issues that are going on in their world.’

Romeo and Juliet runs from the 12-15 Jan in The Weston Studio. To book press tickets contact Imogen Downes at Imogen.Downes@bristololdvic.org.uk.
