This festive season in Bristol you can discover the home of the eighteenth century writer behind one the most popular, well-known Christmas carols of all time; Hark! The herald angels sing.
Charles Wesley’s house is aptly on 4 Charles Street, although actually named after King Charles 1st, Wesley comes with his own fame - as one of the founding fathers of Methodism and widely regarded as the world’s greatest hymn writer.
The much loved carol ‘Hark! The herald angels sing’ was actually first set to slow solemn music, not the joyful tune we know today. This festive tour will share the original opening line to the song, now forgotten, and the rooms in which Charles Wesley lived with his family and wrote many of his hymns.
The exclusive access tours this December will transport visitors back to 1769 where Charles Wesley and his family are getting ready for Christmas. Visitors can enjoy a mince pie, carols, beautiful floral displays and find out how Christmas was celebrated in the 18th century.
Perfect for history lovers this Christmas, the tour will share artefacts and insights into 18th Century life in Bristol. Visitors can learn about childhood (or lack of childhood) at that time, discover the medical and hygiene practices of the era and find out what culinary delights were on the table for Christmas.
