Sudeley Castle will bring the past to life this weekend (4 – 5 September) during their annual celebration of the remarkable Katherine Parr, Henry VIII’s sixth wife, who is famously buried in the spectacular 15th century church within the grounds of Sudeley Castle.
The family-friendly weekend includes historical re-enactors expertly portraying the Dowager Queen Katherine, her sister and serial Lady in Waiting; Anne Herbert together with Lady Jane Grey and Princess Elizabeth.
Visitors can explore the Castle’s newly refurbished exhibition rooms for a fascinating insight into the life of Katherine Parr and her involvement with Sudeley Castle. Precious artefacts, such as her prayer book with hand-written notes and letters, are on display for visitors to discover.
On Sunday 5 September, Miles Coverdale, almoner to Katherine Parr, will talk of her life, love and times as the last wife of Henry VIII in the spectacular St Mary’s Church. Using music, readings and video, he will tell the largely unknown story of this incredible Queen and her journey from obscurity to the heart of English history and on to her final resting place at Sudeley Castle. Stepmother to two Queens, “Bloody Mary” and Elisabeth I, Queen, Wife and Lover, Katherine’s life story resonates through the ages.
Visitors can also discover the castles eventful 1,000-year history showcased throughout the recently refurbished ‘Royal Sudeley 1000, Trials, Triumphs and Treasures’ exhibition. Families will enjoy the superb Adventure Playground and extensive, beautiful grounds. A range of freshly prepared light bites and snacks are available from the Castle Kitchen Pantry or The Terrace Café, which serves an extended menu featuring local ingredients, a selection of hot and cold food and speciality coffees.
