Bristol Beacon presents a special one-off concert with London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, with violist Antoine Tamestit at Bath Forum on Thursday 7 October.

The concert will mark the welcome return of live full-scale symphonic music to the region since the start of the pandemic.

Bristol Beacon presents the concert at Bath Forum while it undergoes the multi-million pound transformation of its performance spaces, due to re-open in 2023.

Bristol Beacon is embarking on a close relationship with the LSO, with the orchestra not only set to become a mainstay of the venue’s classical seasons when it reopens, but also a key education partner across the city.

Established in 1904, The London Symphony Orchestra ranks among the world’s top orchestras. Today, its reputation is one of uncompromising quality and inspirational repertoires.

Sir Simon Rattle is Music Director of the LSO and one of the world’s leading conductors. Having first directed the orchestra in 1977 at the age of 22, he has conducted the London Symphony Orchestra at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and in acclaimed concerts at the Barbican Centre since 2015.

The programme on offer will be Martinu’s romantic Rhapsody for Viola and Orchestra performed by violist Antoine Tamestit, a performer recognised as one of the great violists, with a depth and beauty to his sound that is unrivalled. In the second half, Sir Simon Rattle leads the orchestra in Beethoven’s Symphony No 6, known as the ‘Pastoral’. This life-affirming homage to nature will be a fitting work to mark the end of the period of silence endured in concert venues during the pandemic, and promises to leave concertgoers joyously refreshed.

The London Symphony Orchestra

Louise Mitchell, Chief Executive of Bristol Beacon, said: “I’m so pleased to welcome the London Symphony Orchestra back to the South West for this special concert at Bath Forum.

It won’t be long now before we have a brand-new, world-class concert hall in Bristol, and we look forward to developing our partnership with the LSO over the coming seasons.”

Kathryn McDowell, Managing Director of the London Symphony Orchestra said: “The LSO is delighted to be embarking on a new long-term relationship with Bristol Beacon and looking forward to playing for audiences at Bath Forum and in due course with audiences across the region.  We are hugely grateful to colleagues at Bristol Beacon for working with us throughout the pandemic to keep this initiative on track.  The full London Symphony Orchestra played their first concert in Bath in 1941 with the last appearance in 2009 with a chamber group.  It has been far too long!”

Tickets are priced at £30 - £55 including booking fee, with a number of £10 tickets available for under 26s.  Tickets will go on sale to Bristol Beacon members and subscribers on Wednesday 11 August, and on general sale to the public on Friday 13 August at www.bristolbeacon.org/shows/london-symphony-orchestra-2021
