Families looking for outdoor adventure at the start of the school holidays are challenged to take part in a self-guided scavenger hunt to help support local charity Julian House.
The Big Summer Scavenger Hunt is organised with Bathscape, a partnership project to encourage people to enjoy the green settings in and around Bath, which is led by Bath and North East Somerset Council.
The event offers local spies and sleuths a chance to test their code-cracking skills while following trails through the council’s Royal Victoria Park or the open countryside near Newton St Loe. Residents can follow either of the two routes on any day between Saturday 24 July and Saturday 7 August.
Councillor Dave Wood, cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services said: “This is a great way to enjoy our beautiful green spaces and countryside walks within walking distance of our city centre and have some fun while contributing to a good cause. Anyone can get involved, both trails are completely free and everyone who cracks the code will be entered into a draw and could win a prize”.
The Super Spies - Family Scavenger Hunt, which follows a route around The Circus, the Royal Crescent and Royal Victoria Park is perfect for families with pushchairs, children of all ages and wheelchair users. Solving riddles at various treasure points will give people alphabetical letters which combine to reveal a code word.
The Code Breaker Trail - GPS Scavenger Hunt is suitable or adults and children over 12 and follows a six-mile circular trail through ancient woodland and open fields taking in Newton Brook and the village of Newton St Low. Following a map and finding and scanning QR codes eventually reveals the code word.
Jessica Gay, Senior Community & Events Fundraiser at Julian House, said: “It’s the first time we’ve run this event and it’s been carefully designed to be COVID-19 safe and accessible to everyone in Bath. We’re hoping for some nice sunny days, but whatever the weather we’d just like people to come along and take part.
“While there’s no ticket fee, we’re hoping that if possible, people will offer a donation to help vulnerable men, women and children experiencing homelessness and escaping domestic abuse.”
Bathscape is a National Lottery Heritage Fund supported project aimed at reconnecting people with the natural landscape.
