Don’t let lockdown stand in the way of treating the mum in your life this Mother’s Day (14 March). Bristol businesses have stepped up to offer national delivery of unique gifts, at-home experiences and food and drink delights to help you mark this special day.
Experiences
Local, Thornbury-based 6 O’clock Gin are hosting virtual distillery tours and online gin tasting events to be enjoyed at home on Saturday evenings, with events on 13th and 20th March, ideal for a Mother’s Day gift experience. The 90-minute tours cost £25 per person and are hosted by brand ambassador Tristan who takes participants for a behind the scenes tour of the distillery, explaining the process and ethos behind the company and then hosts the tasting of three gins and mixers (all sent to you in the post in advance).
For a mind-bending experience, Bristol’s science museum We the Curious are hosting at-home planetarium nights via Zoom with their ‘Life in the Universe’ show. Imagine a world very different from our own and search for alien life in this interactive show using advanced planetarium software and expert presenters. The show is recommended for over 10s, if you want to make it a family event, and costs is £5 per device.
Theatres may be closed but you can still see incredible performances online with Bristol Old Vic Theatre’s At Home Season Pass. The pass (valid until 30 April) costs £12.99 and enables you to stream any five productions including family-friendly shows such as Swallows and Amazons, A Christmas Carol and The Night that Autumn Turned to Winter, as well as their productions of The Grinning Man and Messiah (both suitable for those aged 12+). Alternatively, you can rent any one of the productions for 48 hours for £4.50. Bristol Old Vic Theatre has also recently announced the star-studded cast for their 21-Century take on Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, with famous names including Joanna Lumley, Stephen Fry and Emma McDonald joining Fionn Whitehead in the title role. The show is available to stream online just after Mother’s Day from 16-31 March for £12.
For an experience you can enjoy with your mum, try a virtual cocktail making class this Mother’s Day with Home Cocktails, who post all the ingredients to you. Mix up your favourite tipple in this masterclass which is carried out over Zoom and lasts 2 hours, costing £45 per person (excluding delivery).

Or order her locally-produced fine wine from Aldwick Estate in Mendip Hills who sell individual bottles or cases and gift boxes. Gifts
While non-essential retail is closed, there are a number of inspiring options to buy a special gift and support local, independent businesses too. Bristol Museums shop sell jewellery, candles, mugs, Bristol-themed puzzles and prints and quirky Stokes Croft China, while the Visit Bristol online shop has street art, cookbooks, Bristol prints, homeware and gifts available to order with nationwide delivery.
If you’re looking for an artistic-themed present, Bristol has a buzzing, creative community to draw from. RPS (Royal Photographic Society) has a curated collection of postcards, posters, exhibition catalogues, books and limited edition prints to buy online and Martin Parr Foundation sells an exclusive set of prints, books and tote bags related to their exhibitions. Local artists’ work can be bought online from Room 212 which sells gifts, art, prints, paintings and jewellery for truly distinctive presents, or buy an original piece of art from Royal West of England Academy 168 Annual Open Exhibition for a spectacular one-off gift. The infamous The Original Bristol Blue Glass sell handmade glassware vases, and jewellery made to order, made for you to mark this Mother’s Day in a special way.
For green-fingered mums, Jekka’s stock Grow At Home Herb Kits, seeds and plants as well as books, cards, food and drink, and Tyntesfield National Trust shop also sells perfect gifts for gardeners including garden mirrors, ornaments and planters as well as gifts for interiors too like throws, candles and tableware.
While travel is off-limits this Mother’s Day, you can still give the mum in your life the gift of escapism and help her ‘travel’ to Bristol via a great book. Visit Bristol has put together a list of books that do just this, including Watching You by Lisa Jewell – a crime novel based in one of Bristol’s most exclusive and affluent neighbourhoods – and Birdcage Walk by Helen Dunmore which depicts life in Bristol during the French Revolution.
Or for a cute, alternative Mother’s Day gift, why not adopt an adorable animal for your mum from Bristol Zoo Gardens? In your adoption pack, you receive a ticket to Bristol Zoo Gardens to see your animal (when restrictions allow), a cuddly toy, an adoption certificate and fact file of your chosen animal and your name displayed at the exhibit.
