In 2022, the local visitor economy in the West of England employed most 42,000 people, roughly 7% of the region's workforce.

Employment in the industry is exceptionally diverse, with major regional employers in the travel and transport industry through to small artisan businesses. We see excellent examples of entrepreneurship and enterprise, particularly in how businesses are adapting post-pandemic.

Like the rest of the UK industry, we experience skills shortages and recruitment challenges, which in recent years have been impacted by Brexit and the devastating impact on the tourism and hospitality sectors of the Covid-19 pandemic.
