Her Green Hell is the reimagined true story of seventeen-year-old Juliane Koepcke who was trapped in the Peruvian rainforest after surviving a plane crash. Awarded four stars in The Stage, this captivating drama, written and directed by Emma Howlett and performed by Sophie Kean, tours to the Ustinov Studio in Bath for a run of five performances from Tuesday 24 to Saturday 28 September, presented by Theatre Goose.

Trapped in the Peruvian rainforest, having survived a plane crash and a fall of 10,000 feet, seventeen-year-old Juliane is utterly alone and hopelessly lost. But as the daughter of two Amazon zoologists, she knows what to do.

Her Green Hell reimagines the true survival story of Juliane Koepcke in an odyssey of vivid storytelling through a combination of physical theatre and puppetry. Interrogating our fractured relationship with nature, Juliane’s story reveals the strength of humility in the face of insurmountable danger and is as much about the rainforest’s struggle to survive, as it is Juliane’s.

Debuting at Waterloo’s VAULT Festival, Her Green Hell transferred for a critically acclaimed run at Summerhall at the Edinburgh Fringe 2023, where it was nominated for two OFFIE Awards and longlisted for the BBC Popcorn New Writing Award.

Her Green Hell marked writer and director Emma Howlett’s professional debut, two years after she founded Theatre Goose when she was studying at Oxford University. Emma, who hails from Bath, was a member of the Young People’s Theatre at The Egg at the Theatre Royal Bath in her formative years.

Performance and dramaturgy is by Sophie Kean, set and costume design is by Ellie Wintour, lighting design is by Ed Saunders, with original score by Sarah Spencer. Her Green Hell has been developed in association with Theatre Royal Plymouth.
