Bristol Megascreen - Bristol's former IMAX cinema, located at Bristol Aquarium in the heart of the harbourside, welcomes new webpages on the Aquarium website. Visitors can find out more about upcoming events and venue hire details for the cinema at www.bristolaquarium.co.uk/megascreen. The aquarium has been working with Bristol’s passionate film loving community to restore its cinema over the past few years.

The 300-seater auditorium has been revamped with brand new carpet, surround sound and a new lens for the Christie projector to accommodate the 19x15m screen, making it the second largest screen in the South West, just behind IMAX Plymouth.

During their recent Prehistoric Sealife season in the Easter holidays, staff at the aquarium discovered that the screen is so big that you could fit the entire length of a Megalodon, a giant prehistoric shark which roamed the seas over 3.6 million years ago, inside it. Inspired by the magnificent creature, and its awesome size which echoes the magnitude of the brilliant space, they chose the cinema’s new name - Bristol Megascreen.

Chloe O’Dell, events manager of the Aquarium said “Film fans will have noticed, and hopefully enjoyed, the screenings that have been returning to our gigantic former IMAX screen, over the past few years.

Thanks to the hard work and passion of Bristol's film community we have been steadily restoring this space and are incredibly excited to be working towards hosting more films and events in the future.

We’d really like to thank 20th Century Flicks. Without Dave's dedication to providing a high-quality projection service for us, and his passion for creating incredible and affordable cinema, we wouldn't be where we are today. Big thanks to Ti Singh of Bristol Bad Film Club and Forbidden Worlds Film Festival for his passion and hard work in helping to renovate this space, as well as his drive and vision in showing fantastic and interesting films. A huge thank you also to Andrew Maclean and Faisal Rahman for their work on our sound system over the years. Their knowledge and expertise has been invaluable.

Finally, we are so grateful to local film festivals and groups such as Forbidden Worlds Film Festival, South West Silents, Film Noir UK and Screens of Matter who have been instrumental in bringing films back here. It is incredible to have this interest in our amazing space and we are so excited to be pushing things forward and opening up new opportunities for the future.”

Upcoming events at the cinema include: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert on the 6th July from Queer Vision, Bristol Pride's annual film festival, a double bill of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Tucker and Dale vs Evil on the 21 July from 20th Century Flicks and a whole day of classic film including Paris, Texas and The Conversation, as part of Cinema Rediscovered festival on the 27 July.
