Careers & Training

The visitor economy in the West of England employs 43,000 people, roughly 7% of the region's workforce.

Employment in the industry is exceptionally diverse, with major regional employers in the travel and transport industry through to small artisan businesses. We see excellent examples of entrepreneurship and enterprise, as well as global investment in the region, enhancing and developing the visitor experience.

Like the rest of the UK’s tourism and hospitality industry, there are some skills shortages and recruitment challenges. We work with the education sector and local authorities to enable them to better promote the industry as a career of choice and to support skills development programmes in the region wherever possible.

We also aim to support existing businesses and employees to develop the skills and knowledge to enable business growth, such as developing new routes to market through training and product development.
