Local businesses are being offered the chance to apply for grants of £20,000 or £50,000 from the West of England Combined Authority led by Dan Norris. The Mayor announced the latest cash on offer to innovate and grow at NuNano, a Bristol company which takes very high-res images of tiny objects that are nanometres in size.

NuNano has previously benefitted from a £20,000 Business Innovation Fund award from the West of England Combined Authority to develop new products for the mini-photo industry.

Speaking at the launch, Metro Mayor Dan Norris said: “From Brunel to Concorde our region has always been at the forefront of innovation. Today we are helping to make sure that rich history continues now and into the future. Through the power of investment in innovation we can build an even more efficient, creative and sustainable future and really put our region on the map nationally and internationally.”

The Mayor went on to praise NuNano whose world-class technology is used in medicine to picture individual kidney cells, to distinguish cancer cells and normal cells; and to look in detail at the structure of cells that biofuels feed off.

He said: “Thank you to NuNano for hosting us. It’s fascinating to hear about their ambitious plans to develop cutting edge products.”

Managing Director James Vicary said: “We are delighted to receive funding from the West of England Combined Authority Business Innovation Fund.  This will help accelerate the development of our next generation of sensors for nanoscale characterisation and support the future growth of NuNano.”

The West of England Combined Authority’s Business Innovation Fund is now open for applications and provides small and medium sized enterprises with support and funding that will lead to the creation of new products, processes and services.
